A mule is a note that has a micro size check number on one side and a macro size number ont he other. Mocro numbers measure 0.6mm high whereas the macro numbers are 1mm high. Mules cam about with the adoption of macro plate check numbers beginning in January 1938. Micro Back notes are the more common as the back design did not change and the plates were used until they wore out.
